Casting of Little Red Riding Hood

Casting of Little Red Riding Hood

We wanted Little Red Riding Hood to match the character from the original story.
This description is a young looking, white, light hair colored girl. She needs to look young and vulnerable to add to the idea that she is a character who is in danger. Things such as blonde hair represent youth and innocence, her hair needs to be long to make her look like a youthful, timeless character as if she has been brought straight out of the book. This will help the audience to identify with the classic fairy tale character and give them a sense of nostalgia which is one of the purposes we are trying to cause with our film opening.

Our first casting choice was our friend Katie, who appeared within our preliminary task. She was up for the role and we spent a few weeks of preparation working on her character. However, when we started planning the filming day she told us she was unable to do the role as she was on holiday throughout the week which we wanted to film our task. This meant we could no longer use her as our character.

We could not find anyone else who was available to portray the role on the day we wanted to film and so Chelsea, my partner for this coursework said she would take the role and direct at the same time while I managed camera. This was a both effective and complex idea, as she knew exactly what she wanted from the opening sequence and so was able to act exactly how we wanted her to act without instruction which another actor would need to have done. However, it was difficult for her to co direct along side me as she was being filmed and could not see what was being seen via the camera. This meant we would have to keep stopping and starting filming to make sure she agreed with what had been filmed.
